I'm Hao, a Senior Data Analyst in Sydney, and a parent of a kid who sat the NSW Selective High School Placement Test in 2025.

This site started because of him.

The honest version

When my son was in Year 5, we did what every Sydney parent does: tutoring, past papers, reading widely. Writing was the part we both struggled with most. He could tell me his ideas, but turning them into a Band 5 essay under timed exam conditions was a different problem entirely.

I started using off-the-shelf AI tools to give him feedback between weekly tutor sessions. The improvement was real, but only after I'd done a lot of prompt work to get the AI to score the way an NSW marker actually scores. Generic "give me feedback on this essay" prompts produced generic advice. He needed dimension-specific, evidence-backed criticism that matched the official rubric.

He made it into a selective school. Which school doesn't matter. What mattered was that the practice loop worked.

Why this exists

After more than a decade of working with data and AI systems, I kept thinking: every NSW parent should have access to this kind of feedback, not just the ones who can afford weekly tutoring or know how to coax usable scoring out of ChatGPT.

So I rebuilt the whole thing properly:

• A 6-dimension scoring system that mirrors the NSW Selective Writing rubric: Content, Structure, Style, Sentences, Punctuation, Spelling. 25 marks total.
• Evidence quoted from your child's actual writing, so the feedback is verifiable, not hand-wavy.
• A real 30-minute timer with the same phase split markers expect: 5 min plan, 22 min write, 3 min proofread. Practice mirrors the test.
• A 30-second turnaround. Free. No signup wall.
